April 20, 2011, Greencastle, Ind. — The DePauw University Chorus and the DePauw Chamber Singers will join with
the DePauw University Orchestra for the final performance of the school
year on Sunday, May 8. The 3 p.m. concert in the Green Center's Kresge Auditorium will feature two choral works of Johannes Brahms, Schicksalslied (Song of Destiny) and Nänie, under the direction of Jan Harrington, professor of music and director of choral ensembles. The public is invited to attend the free event.
"With a common thread of human mortality, but inspired by the poetry of different German authors, the Brahms music weaves its way through idealism and struggle," Professor Harrington notes. "In both works, immortality is represented by the Greek gods, while mankind recognizes its fate. Brahms' music is powerful in its descriptions of both."
"Other music on the program will provide a thematic connection to and a theatrical setting for the Brahms works," 
adds Orcenith Smith, director of DePauw Orchestras, who will conduct music from Beethoven's ballet The Creatures of Prometheus. "The Beethoven will begin the program and serve as transition between the Brahms works."
The combined choirs and orchestra represent over 160 students from the DePauw School of Music and the wider University community. Music students and liberal arts students audition to be a part of the organizations.
The Judson and Joyce Green Center for the Performing Arts is located at 605 S. College Avenue.
