May 23, 2011, Greencastle, Ind. — Kristen Pflum, a 2004 graduate of DePauw University, has been recognized as "Best News Anchor" in the 2011 Kentucky Associated Press Awards. Nicole Pence, a 2006 DePauw graduate, took second place honors in that category. Pflum anchors the 4 p.m. newscast at Lexington, Kentucky NBC affiliate WLEX-TV while Pence is the station's morning news co-anchor. (at left: Pflum; below right: Pence)

Pflum came to WLEX from WISE-TV in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She's received several previous awards including "Best Television News Reporter" from the Kentucky AP in 2006. In May 2005, Pflum was honored with a third place award for "Best News Reporting" in the Society of Professional Journalists' "Best of Indiana" competition for her work at DePauw's student-run television operation, D3TV.
Pence joined the NBC affiliate in August 2008 as a reporter and was named to the anchor post in March 2010. A 2010 nominee for a regional Emmy Award, she previously worked for Indiana's News Center in Fort Wayne, where she was a reporter and fill-in news anchor. In 2004, she was one of four DePauw students to share a national Society of Professional Journalists' "Mark of Excellence" award for "Best Radio Sports Reporting."
