July 28, 2011, Greencastle, Ind. — "Former Zionsville Community High School graduate Nathan Sprenkel heads into his senior year at DePauw University, chasing a dream," begins an article in Indiana's Zionsville Times Sentinel. "Sprenkel wants to continue playing soccer once he earns his degree in psychology. With that in mind, he spends a majority of his time training and traveling."
The newspaper notes that Sprenkel is traveling to Serbia for a second consecutive summer. Last year, he trained with a professional soccer team there, Red Star Belgrade.
"Last year I had a great experience and got to see what professional clubs were like, what professional training was like and what the professional lifestyle was like," Sprenkel says. "I really enjoyed it and it was a great experience that I’m looking forward to again this summer."
Jake Thompson writes, "DePauw coach Brad Hauter helped Sprenkel along his collegiate soccer journey and is now helping him with his pro ambitions. 'Having played professionally for several years (Hauter) knows the ropes and quite a few people,' Sprenkel said."
The text points out that Sprenkel "was voted the 2010 Newcomer of the Year and followed that season up with a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference first-team selection, became the SCAC defensive player of the year, made the first-team all-region Great Lakes squad, and was an academic All-American. Sprenkel’s 12 shutouts as a goalkeeper last season tied a school record; he accumulated a .43 goals against average (ninth in Division-III) and tallied a .887 save percentage (10th in Division-III). DePauw finished 14-2-2 on the year, thanks in part to Sprenkel’s contributions in front of the net."
