100377August 15, 2011, Greencastle, Ind. — An article on the efforts of Jean Beasley to rehabilitate injured sea turtles includes comments from noted marine biologist J. Nichols, a 1989 graduate of DePauw University.  The McClatchy Newspapers story details how Beasley founded the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in North Carolina, which has operated since 1997 using private contributions and no government funds.  "Fueled almost entirely with small donations, Beasley’s all-volunteer organization has healed and freed more than 300 juvenile and adult sea turtles in the past 14 years," writes Bruce Siceloff.

100378Beasley is preparing to move the hospital to a new, privately-funded building.  The piece describes how she "is known around the world for her success in rehabilitating threatened and endangered sea turtles, and for her frugal ingenuity ... Wallace J. Nichols, a California-based sea turtle biologist, asked Beasley last week to help a colleague make the most of meager start-up funds for a turtle hospital in El Salvador."

"I send a lot of people her way from around the world," Dr. Nichols says.
