August 29, 2011, Greencastle, Ind. — According to Brad Brownell, head men's basketball coach at Clemson University and 1991 graduate of DePauw University, "the qualities of leadership in sports are the same as those for business and civic leaders," reports South Carolina's Anderson Independent Mail. The newspaper reports on Brownell's keynote address at last week's 2011 Oconee Chamber of Commerce awards dinner.
Brownell told attendees, "The parallels in what I do and what you do are quite amazing, and hopefully if we both it right, we will be successful. Leadership has the same qualities and impact in business as it does in athletics because every thing basically rides on your ability to be a 
leader, care for your team, motivate them, and of course make correction were necessary."
The article notes that Brownell "set the Clemson record for wins by a first-year coach in the 2010-11 season with a 22-12 overall record," including a victory in the NCCA tournament. "The 41-year old DePauw University graduate has recorded six 20-win seasons in his eight years as a head coach and has taken three teams to the NCAA tournament."
