September 10, 2011, Greencastle, Ind. — David Griffin, the fourth horn of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, will perform a recital at DePauw University on Tuesday, September 13. The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Thompson Hall, located within DePauw's Judson and Joyce Green Center for Performing Arts. Griffin will be accompanied by guest pianist Patrick Godon.
The concert will feature works by Wolfgang Plagge, Luigi Cherubini, Bruce Broughton, Verne Reynolds, Vaclav Nelhyble, and Robert Schumann. A horn master class is to follow the recital. Both events are free and open to the public.
Griffin began his career with the Rochester Philharmonic and followed with positions in the orchestras of Montreal and Houston before joining the Chicago Symphony in 1995. He has performed in over twenty states with the wind quintet Prairie Winds since the group's debut in 1996.
Collaborating with composer Cliff Colnot, he transcribed long-lost music by Darius Milhaud from the 1939 film Cavalcade d'Amour. The rediscovered music was arranged for wind quintet and utilized in a performing version combining film and live chamber music. The Prairie Winds gave the world premiere in July 2005 at the Madeline Island Music Festival. The Prairie Winds 
has released two critically acclaimed recordings for Albany Records.
In July 2010 Griffin made his debut as a soloist with the Chicago Symphony in a performance of Schumann's Concert Piece for Four Horns. Griffin has served as guest principal horn of the Saint Louis Symphony, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Shanghai Radio Orchestra. He has also been a featured artist and clinician at the annual symposium of the International Horn Society. He recently released a solo horn album, For You.
Patrick Godon made his debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as second keyboardist at Ravinia in 2003. He was invited to play second keyboard on the CSO's 2005 European tour and for CSO Carnegie Hall performances for the past five consecutive years. He made his debut as soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in May of 2007, playing one of the solo piano parts along with Mary Sauer in Colin McPhee's Tabuh-Tabuhan: Toccata for Orchestra and Two Pianos, with Alan Gilbert conducting.
