September 23, 2011, Greencastle, Ind. — "If you can’t change with the times, you’ll get run over with a steam roller," says Doug Samuels, president of Young's Appliances in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. Samuels, who earned a master's degree from DePauw University in 1979, leads a shop which is celebrating its 80th year in business. "The competition keeps coming but the reality is that (large chains) are about price and nothing else, and that’s all you’ll get," he tells the Glen Ellyn News. "We maintain a level of service (which has kept us open)."
Samuels has worked for the family-owned business since 1984 and was named president in 1995. "Appliances are no longer used to decorate a home," he tells the newspaper. "The kitchen has transitioned into more than a cooking center, it’s an entertainment and gathering place with the feel of a family room."
A sidebar notes Samuels' DePauw degree. He states, "We're not trying to be the biggest, but we provide a quality lifestyle for our employees and give customers what they want."
