September 27, 2011, Greencastle, Ind. — The DePauw Jazz Ensemble will feature compositions and arrangements originally performed by many of the great big bands of past and present this Saturday afternoon, October 1. The group's opening concert of the Fall 2011 semester will begin at 3 p.m. in Kresge Auditorium, located within DePauw's Green Center for the Performing Arts. The program is presented free of admission charge and is open to the public.
Concert highlights will include an arrangement of Freedom Jazz Dance, originally recorded by Woody Herman; Bill Holman’s composition of The Opener for Stan Kenton; and Sy Johnson’s great arrangement of Moanin’ for the Charles Mingus Big Band. The band will also perform original compositions by Sammy Nestico, Frank Wess, Bob Mintzer, and Thomas Matta. The Jazz Ensemble will also present the great Mary Lou Williams composition Roll ‘Em as originally performed by the Benny Goodman Orchestra.
The DePauw Jazz Ensemble has expanded this year to twenty-two members, including twelve talented new first-year students. The ensemble will also spotlight the vocal talents of sophomore Annelise Delcambre, singing a lovely arrangement of I Like the Likes of You.
“We are really excited to start the semester off with such a diverse concert and feature the new talent joining the band,” states Shawn Salmon, director of the jazz ensemble. “We are especially excited to be performing during the week of DePauw’s Discourse 2011.”
