October 2, 2011, Greencastle, Ind. — "I have always enjoyed the 'aha' moments and when I am able to help a
student achieve something they never thought they could achieve," Doug McElhaney, an instrumental music (band) teacher at Crestview Middle School in Huntington, Indiana, tells the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette. Featured in the newspaper's "Teacher Honor Roll" column today, McElhaney is a 1988 graduate of DePauw University.
"We would like to nominate Mr. McElhaney because he motivates us to be good musicians," wrote sisters Rebecca and Caroline Everidge. "His class is always fun, he makes our hard work seem like play. And he tells really corny jokes that only some of us think are funny. We know that even when we have troubles in other classes, or at home, he is still happy to see us and have us play in his band. We wish every kid could be in band and know this great teacher!"
