November 19, 2011, Greencastle, Ind. — Two DePauw University students -- Nathan Crawford '14 and Erika Matson '13 -- have been awarded scholarships for their work in jazz music. Both are members of the DePauw Jazz Ensemble.
Crawford (pictured), the ensemble's lead alto saxophonist, will receive a jazz fellowship from the Indianapolis Jazz Foundation. He has been invited to play at the Jazz Kitchen in Indianapolis on December 14, where he will be presented with his award.
Matson, the ensemble's lead tenor saxophonist, will be awarded the Mary Jo Papich Women in Jazz Scholarship by the Jazz Education Network. The award will be presented at the JEN National Conference in January 2012.
I saw these scholarships and thought of Erika and Nathan right away," says Shawn Salmon, director of the DePauw Jazz Ensemble. "Not only are they wonderful musicians, but are emerging as a valuable leaders in the band. I am very happy for both of them."
