November 19, 2011, Greencastle, Ind. — Mike Leonard, head football coach at Franklin College and the recipient of a master's degree from DePauw University in 1987, is the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. The Indianapolis Star notes that it's the "fifth time in nine seasons" that Leonard has received the award.

Leonard guided the Grizzlies to their fourth conference title and a 9-1 overall record this season. Franklin finished alone in first place in the HCAC with a perfect 8-0 mark. The team's only loss was a 45-0 defeat to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, ranked #1 in NCAA Division III. Franklin, ranked #17, opens the NCAA Playoffs today at home against #20 Thomas More.
Last year, Leonard was named the American Football Coaches Association's 2010 Division III Region 4 Coach of the Year, sharing the honor with Larry Kehres of University of Mount Union.
