94504April 20, 2011, Greencastle, Ind. — The DePauw University Chorus and the DePauw Chamber Singers will join with the DePauw University Orchestra for the final performance of the school year on Sunday, May 8.  The 3 p.m. concert in the Green Center's Kresge Auditorium will feature two choral works of Johannes Brahms, Schicksalslied (Song of Destiny) and Nänie, under the direction of Jan Harrington, professor of music and director of choral ensembles.    The public is invited to attend the free event.

"With a common thread of human mortality, but inspired by the poetry of different German authors, the Brahms music weaves its way through idealism and struggle," Professor Harrington notes.  "In both works, immortality is represented by the Greek gods, while mankind recognizes its fate.  Brahms' music is powerful in its descriptions of both."

"Other music on the program will provide a thematic connection to and a theatrical setting for the Brahms works," 93665adds Orcenith Smith, director of DePauw Orchestras, who will conduct music from Beethoven's ballet The Creatures of Prometheus.  "The Beethoven will begin the program and serve as transition between the Brahms works."

The combined choirs and orchestra represent over 160 students from the DePauw School of Music and the wider University community.  Music students and liberal arts students audition to be a part of the organizations.

The Judson and Joyce Green Center for the Performing Arts is located at 605 S. College Avenue.

Steve Langerud Shares Resume Pointers with MSNBC.com

88900April 20, 2011, Greencastle, Ind. — "Resume mistakes have become smaller and more important with the level of competition out there," Steve Langerud, director of professional opportunities at DePauw University, tells MSNBC.com. The man who has helped more than 15,000 people with workplace issues is quoted in an article that examines "Six resume mistakes to avoid."

DePauw's so-called "career coach" makes the point that "you can't forget the basics when it comes to resume writing," reports Eve Tahmincioglu. "As a refresher, Langerud offered a list of the basic resume blunders he hears about most often from hiring managers at companies."

The complaints include:

  • Poor spelling
  • Incorrect address or phone number
  • Fonts that are too small to read 4695
  • Crazy formatting

According to Langerud, "While simplistic, the most effective resumes lead a reader through the material like a good book or magazine article. Every time you change the format with spaces, new fonts, etc., you focus the reader on the format change and away from the content. Keep it simple," he advises.

You'll find the complete story at the network's website.

Steve Langerud is regularly quoted in articles on the job market and career development, including an April 3 story in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and a recent piece in the Philadelphia Inquirer. 91677April 20, 2011, Greencastle, Ind. — "DePauw University in Indiana was everything Janelle Arita wanted in a college," begins a story in today's Honolulu Star-Advertiser. "It was a chance to experience something completely different in a part of the country where she knew absolutely nobody. And it allowed her an opportunity to continue her tennis career."

Billy Hull writes that the decision to attend DePauw "has changed Arita in ways she never thought imaginable. Now, the 2007 Punahou graduate considers herself an adventurous type of person, evidenced by her decision to teach English in Japan for a year after she graduates next month."

"It's all because of DePauw's influence on me and stepping out of my comfort zone to go 94735to school here," Arita tells the newspaper. "It's given me the confidence that I could adapt to a new environment and try new things." (photo at right: Alex Turco '10)

Hull adds, "Confidence has never been an issue with her tennis game, which has been instrumental in the Tigers winning the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship every year she's been there. Arita stepped right in at the No. 1 singles position and started winning immediately, posting a 26-9 record her freshman year. She is 19-9 as a senior, but has won seven in a row as the Tigers prepare to defend their conference title on Friday." Arita is an All-American in tennis.

Hazel also will partner with the Minority Health Coalition, teaching classes, meeting with physicians and encouraging businesses to create smoke-free environments for employees and visitors ... Upcoming Visitor and Recent Discourse Headliner Among 'TIME 100'

94554April 22, 2011, Greencastle, Ind. — Jennifer Egan, who will appear at DePauw University Wednesday to read from her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, A Visit from the Goon Squad, has been named by TIME magazine as one of its 100 most influential people in the world. The 2011 TIME 100 also includes Joe Scarborough, co-host of MSNBC's Morning Joe, who was featured at DePauw Discourse on September 24, 2010.

In the May 2 issue, which hits newsstands today, the list also includes Justin Bieber, U.S. Reps. Michele Bachmann and Gabrielle Giffords, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, first lady Michelle Obama and the soon-to-be-married Prince William and Kate Middleton. "They are artists and activists,85576 reformers and researchers, heads of state and captains of industry," notes the magazine. "Their ideas spark dialogue and dissent and sometimes even revolution."

"There is, apparently, no story that Jennifer Egan can't tell," Curtis Sittenfeld writes in TIME. "Her five books of fiction range from an achingly gorgeous coming-of-age novel (The Invisible Circus) to a gothic tale of betrayal (The Keep) to a multidecade kaleidoscopic depiction of the music business (A Visit from the Goon Squad, this year's Pulitzer Prize winner for fiction). Uniting disparate settings and characters is Egan's ferocious intelligence; she writes with the clarity and sharpness of a pane of glass. For the past 15 years, she has also brought her distinctive lucidity to journalism, writing pieces about subjects such as gay teenagers and homeless families. No matter what the topic is, I know if Egan wrote the article, I'll want to read it."

Of Scarborough, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg writes, "On every issue, Joe speaks his mind without fear or favor, because he puts his country before his party. He served for seven years as a Republican Congressman from Florida, but he is a patriot before he is a politician or a 94751pundit. That independence is what makes Joe Scarborough such a valuable voice in American politics. And it's what makes Morning Joe such a successful show. (That, and of course the real star of the show, Mika Brzezinski.)"

Access the complete list at the magazine's website.

Jennifer Egan's April 27 reading at DePauw comes nine days after she won the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. She is also the recipient of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction.  Her Greencastle appearance, sponsored by the James and Marilou Kelly Writers Series, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Meharry Hall of historic East College and is free and open to the public. It was also noted in Tuesday's Indianapolis Star.

Performing Arts Series Presents Two Tales for All Ages Next Weekend

94752April 22, 2011, Greencastle, Ind. — Medieval storytelling and music are intertwined in Silence and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the final Performing Arts Series events of the 2010-11 academic year. In Silence, master raconteur Dolores Hydock enacts the 700 year-old tale of a young girl who is raised as a boy for the sake of property rights. The classic Arthurian legend is reenacted in Sir Gawain and the Greek Knight. The early music trio PanHarmonium accompanies both performances. (photo: Hydock and PanHarmonium on stage)

Silence will be performed on Friday, April 29, at 7:30 p.m. in Thompson Recital Hall of the Judson and Joyce Green Center for the Performing Arts.

Sir Gawain will be presented Saturday, April 30, at 2 p.m. in the Great Room94753 of the Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics. This event is sponsored by the Butler Fund of the department of art and art history, Cultural Resource Center, the Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics, and women's studies program.

Both programs are free and the public is invited to attend.

In both of her poignant and humorous tales, Hydock creates several characters onstage -- from an old hag, to an avaricious king, to Sir Gawain himself. Her minimal props and staging create true theatre of the mind that combines the ancient with the modern. PanHarmonium uses instruments such as the hurdy-gurdy, psaltery, recorders, harp, lute and viols to enhance the authenticity of her performances.

Hydock is a writer, storyteller and actor who has toured extensively in the United States. Her six compact discs of original stories have all received Resource Awards from Storytelling World magazine.

PanHarmonium, comprised of musicians David Cantrell, Susan Merchant and Gilbert Ritchie, has performed at the National Storytelling Festival and the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, among others. Their repertoire includes medieval, Renaissance and baroque music.

"The performances by Dolores Hydock and PanHarmonium offer our community the unprecedented experience of seeing and hearing works of medieval literature come to life," says Anne F. Harris, chair of the department of art and art history. "The stories of Silence and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight are gripping and speak to contemporary issues of identity and the self in the world."94754

"I'm excited that we’re closing out the 2011 Performing Arts Series with two performances that combine elements from so many performances and literary genres -- theatre, music, fiction and poetry," adds Ronald "Ron" L. Dye, associate professor of English and communication and theatre, and coordinator of the Performing Arts Series. "It's likely that most modern performance genres have their origins in traditional storytelling. So, hopefully Hydock's two shows will appeal to wide audiences."

For the Saturday, April 30 performance at the Prindle Institute, Rural Transit will provide free shuttle service departing from the front of the DePauw Memorial Student Union Building at 1:40 p.m. and returning after the performance at approximately 3:30 p.m. Additionally, transportation will be available from the lower parking lot up to the Institute for people who have difficulty walking up the steep hill.

94758April 22, 2011, Greencastle, Ind. — "Pat Echeverria never has been a head coach but should know a thing or two about rebuilding football programs as he takes over at Eastern Hancock," begins an Indianapolis Star article on the 2001 DePauw University graduate. "Echeverria served as the defensive coordinator at Pike the last four years, as the Red Devils went 39-9 and reached the Class 5A state title game in 2007. Before that, he was a top assistant to Derek Moyers at Cascade, where they turned around a struggling program and went 18-4 in Moyers' final two seasons before he took over at Pike -- where he brought in Echeverria," writes Michael Pointer.

"That combination of success at large 5A Pike and small 2A Cascade led Echeverria, 31, to Charlottestown, where he has been hired as 1A Eastern Hancock's new head coach."

"I honestly believe Pat is the perfect fit," Eastern Hancock athletic director Aaron Spaulding tells the newspaper. "In my mind's eye, when we started the process, he fit about as close as you could come to what I was looking for.

5099The text notes, "Echeverria played football at DePauw University before starting his coaching career at Cascade. He left there to become the defensive coordinator at Perry Meridian for one season in 2006 before rejoining Moyers at Pike." A biological sciences major at DePauw, he spent the 2001 season as an assistant under his college coach, Nick Mourouzis.

Legendre, a performance/business major in the DePauw School of Music and Bonner Scholar, is Big Brother to Logan, a student at Cloverdale Elementary School.  Big Brothers Big Sisters staff say Patrick has been "a consistent friend and mentor" to Logan, who describes his older friend as "really cool, nice and fun." The pair enjoy playing basketball and games as well as working on homework and puzzles.

Since 2008 Legendre has also worked to recruit 94759other DePauw students to serve as Bigs, has organized annual parties for Little Brothers and Little Sisters on campus, and put together an annual fundraising event at DePauw.  This year's fundraiser, Starting Line for Littles, was held April 8, and raised over $1,000 to support children in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.

Ally Walker is a sociology/anthropology major and history minor. She became a Big Sister during her freshman year at DePauw in October 2007, when she was matched with Trinity, then a second grader at Cloverdale Elementary. "In the four years in which they've regularly visited together, Trinity has transformed from a shy second grader who wasn't engaged in the classroom into an academically and socially confident fifth grader," notes the agency. The young women take walks, play games, and do homework together, and Walker has served as a classroom volunteer, helping with small group activities and class projects.  According to Trinity, Ally is "fun, nice, smart, creative, caring, and helpful."

94756April 23, 2011, Greencastle, Ind. — "The Arts Council of Indianapolis announced the recipients of the 2011 Creative Renewal Arts Fellowships last week, and I was delighted to find visual artist Lori Miles among the winners," opines NUVO's Dan Grossman. "Miles, an assistant professor of art at DePauw University, is an intriguing artist with a whimsical take on all things extraterrestrial who I remember as part of the [Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art's] show 'Phenomenon' back in October, 2009, in which she seamlessly merged her interest in UFOs and aliens with a humorous pop sensibility." (at left: The Lost Weekend (thanks, Yoko), 2009, by Lori Miles)

The fellowship provides $10,000 to an artist "to refresh and renew their artistic work," writes Grossman. "Miles is pleased to find herself on the list of winners and the possibilities it will provide. 'I think the timing of it was really appropriate. I have my first sabbatical coming up next year. This will help me take advantage of the time in a really special way.' The fellowship will enable Miles to apprentice in an auto body shop, learn the art of shoemaking with a cobbler, and explore industrial techniques of replication like mold making. 'I'm also taking a welding certification class,' she says. I look forward to finding out93343 how mastery of these assorted earthy tradecrafts affect Miles' far-flung artistic explorations."

New Book by James B. Stewart '73 "An Extraordinary Forensic Analysis": Business Week

93104April 25, 2011, Greencastle, Ind. —  "James B. Stewart's engrossing new book," Tangled Webs: How False Statements Are Undermining America: From Martha Stewart to Bernie Madoff, "is an extraordinary forensic analysis of the high-stakes American liar," according to a Business Week review. Stewart is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and 1973 graduate of DePauw University. Tangled Webs was released last week.

"Stewart's CV already includes two masterworks about executive-suite hubris: DisneyWar and Den of Thieves," writes David Kamp. Stewart's new book examines the high-profile cases of Martha Stewart, Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Barry Bonds and Bernard Madoff. "In Stewart's view, these stories are proof that we're living through a sustained bull market for liars, and 'that the broad public commitment to telling the truth 94944under oath has been breaking down, eroding over recent decades.' Current headlines suggest he's on to something."

The review adds, "Much will be made of the bombshells contained within Tangled Webs -- particularly Stewart's contention that Karl Rove lied to President George W. Bush when asked if he was a source for the Robert Novak column that outed Plame ... The book is most impressive, however, on the granular level. Drawing upon transcripts of grand jury testimony and notes taken by FBI agents and other federal investigators -- information unsealed in the course of 93103judicial proceedings or through the author's own Freedom of Information Act requests -- Stewart is able to get up close to his protagonists to provide, he says, 'a rare look at the very moment these people made the fateful choice to lie.' This is tweezer journalism at its finest."

Access the complete 4-star (out of five) review at Business Week's website.

A former Page One editor at the Wall Street Journal, Stewart won a Pulitzer Prize in 1988 for his reporting on the stock market crash and insider trading. He is a regular contributor to SmartMoney and the New Yorker. His previous books also include Blood Sport and Blind Eye. An opera based on Stewart's best-selling 2002 book, Heart of a Soldier: A Story of Love, Heroism, and September 11th, will have its world premiere on September 10, 2011, at the San Francisco Opera.

A member of DePauw's Board of Trustees and former chair of the group, James B. Stewart was the 2006 recipient of the Loeb Award, the highest honor in business journalism. He received DePauw's Young Alumni Award in 1988, an Alumni Citation in 1988, an honorary Doctor of Journalism degree in 1989, and the Old Gold Goblet in 2009.
